"So ah . . . where do you think we are?"

While you may never have asked this question, there are thousands of hikers, backcountry skiers and snowshoers, climbers, fishermen, hunters and forest workers who have. Wilderness Navigation is the concise, focused, and affordable answer to that question.

Based on the experience of helping revise the navigation section of the best-selling climbing textbook, Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills, and years of teaching wilderness navigation, the authors have expanded the material in Freedom using the most reliable, dependable, and easy-to-learn methods ever devised.

Wilderness Navigation will answer all your questions on reading maps; buying a compass; using a compass, a clinometer, an altimeter, and a GPS; orientation with map and compass; how to avoid getting lost; and what to do if you get lost. It also covers wilderness routefinding on trails, in the forest, in alpine areas, and on snow and glaciers.

What Customers Say About Wilderness Navigation: Finding Your Way Using Map, Compass, Altimeter, & Gps:

good advice on buying a compass. easy to read. really tries to teach you techniques.

Can't miss with a compass and it has gotten me home everytime. I thought the book had good information on compass navigation, especially good for novices. It is imperative that people be up on the use of a compass, GPS in remote locations can be a hit and miss kind of thing when it comes to satellite reception.

Mine is the Suunto MC-2 Global, but it has a drawback: inches on the rulers and not centimeters. For most, a good map and compass are all you really need. Buy a good compass with adjustable declination and mirror, as the authors suggest. Most foreign topos are in meters. Take book, compass, and map out into your neighborhood and practice in your own backyard before heading off into the boonies. I think this is the best book for backpackers and hikers in general, particularly those who will venture off trail.

Your most important tools for wilderness navigation will be a good compass, along with a proper map. I would add one thing that is only mentioned briefly in this fine text: If you go hiking abroad or in the Southern Hemisphere, you need to buy a Global compass. It extensively covers use of map and compass; and goes on to briefly but cogently discuss the more expensive gadgets- altimeter, and GPS. Only a fool would go into the wilderness without a map. Buy a good global compass with both inches and centimeters, study this book, and you are prepared for navigating just about anywhere. And it warns you not to become too dependent on these more expensive gadgets.

Read their recommendations for this essential tool before you shop, and then go to the USGS website and get a downloadable topo map for your residence.

This book gives a great introduction to the art of navigating in the field using a map and compass. Well written and flows smooth.

IF YOU WANT A GOOD BOOK THAT GETS TO THE POINT THIS IS THE ONE. OK BOOK WORTH THE MONEY. I DID, I AM NOT DISAPPOINTED. THE PRICE IS NOT A KILLER SO WHY NOT GO FOR IT. ISSUES ARE THE BINDING IS WEAK AND PAGES ARE STARTING TO FALL OUT IF I WANT TO TAKE IT OUT ON THE TRAIL FOR REFERENCE. ALSO, IMAGES RELATIVE TO INSTRUCTION ARE ON THE SMALL SIDE.
